When Doctors Don’t save Life !

Well, I’ve come to the conclusion that doctors don’t do what they are supposed to do. Gone are the days when doctor profession was considered sacred and doctors as Guardians of Life (Can’t help Smirking here !) .

I’ve met lots of doctors in my life. Almost all of them aimed at looting as much as possible from a patient. The Exorbitant fee of doctors would shock the people who come under the poor and medium level of living. Some doctors demand around Rs 250 to 300 for Consultation ( Billions of Blistering Blue Barnacles!!! )

The Evil Doctor !                                         Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Well, look at the reasons they provide for making looting look good :

1. They have spent enormous amounts for getting a doctor seat in a good college.

Obviously their mistake. If they wanted a doctor seat, they should have worked harder and got a seat in a government college.

2. They have suffered with the tough syllabus and finally finished their course.

Well!!! Who doesn’t? All of us suffer and read. Do they think they can earn a career without working hard for it?

3. They deserve to be paid huge amounts as fees.

So , the poor don’t deserve their treatments? Why the hell do they want to be in this profession when they can’t save life.

What Infuriated me really was an incident that happened a few weeks back.  I found a pup, two actually. Before I could get them adopted , a car ran over them. I was in college when that incident happened. Only one survived. But it was walking oddly. So I took it to a vet in my area. He examined it and found out that it was bone dislocation.

The Doctor did not want to take up responsibility because it was a stray ! He told me to take it to a place where they would do free treatment. But Both of us knew the place was not good and that they would not care much for the pup. Left with no alternative , I told him I would go there and asked whether I could use his name there, so that the treatment would be started sooner. He told me not use his name!

What sort of a doctor is he supposed to be. Should he not feel guilty for not trying to save the pup? What respect does his position hold if it can’t be used to save a life.

I’m posting this here, because if your a student aspiring to become a doctor, don’t ever think about using your profession as a money producing machine. Learn to save lives!

hey…take it easy! I know its not quite what you might want to hear, but there are always two sides to a coin…and sometimes you dont see both. I am not going to defend the vet whp could be that callous enough.. No doctor should let go of the “empathy” for the ailing.. But, generalising the whole thing and extrapolating it to a whole community can be bad and too harsh. I am a doctor. I have studied in a reputed government college, and its not easy to go through the course, just try taking it yourself once! Am not here to admonish, but offer another viewpoint.. that yes we do work hard, and some of us might turn out to be bad apples! But, there are scores of others laying down their own sleep, sweat and blood to help the ones in need. And I really dunno why people scream about a doctor’s fee so much, when they can and do spend thousands on a cell phone or a designer dress which they might not even wear! I am all for helping out the underpriveleged in the society, and there are scores of them… but how about the priveleged ones??! I hope you get my viewpoint..Its nothing personal, and I do understand your plight. I love animals myself, I have scores of so called strays in my neighbourhood I love to feed(albeit the neighbours are not too happy! ;) ) .. And I truly respect your sentiments.. But, don’t go throwing stones at all & sundry! Hope your puppy gets well soon! My prayers for him or her!

    really good one Nithya……
I agree with your .. for all those reasons and justifications :)
if you cant tolerate things happening to pets, what about those doctors who show such an attitude to human beings ? I heard a story, about a doctor trying to learn key hole surgery on a patient ( YESSSSS it was that doctor’s first key hole surgery ever, alone and she is not trained for it ) and the patient lost her life…….

  3. pnithya Says:

Dinsan, That was only one incident I’ve put in the post. Lots of things have happened to humans too. This latest incident made me write this post.
Key hole surgery? Are you sure she was not mad?

  4. pnithya Says:

Well Gypsy girl, Read my post once again. If their fee is this high, how can poor people get treatments? Its not the rich people I’m talking about. Not many doctors spend time for the poor. What a waste of life.
And of course the course is tough. But like I said, every course has tough subjects.
I’m really glad, we have some good doctors like you caring for animals and humans. Hats off to you.

  5. gypsygirl Says:

hey…I did read the post! I do appreciate your concern..and its always better to talk it out rather than let hostility reside in your heart! :) That being said, I have seen a lot of both kind of docs in my life, and I do pity the ones who inspite of earning a lot can be heartless for a dying patient. On the other hand, coming from a family of docs I have also seen my Dad do some wonderful things which were always an inspiration to me… So I strive to do my best, whenever possible. I don’t deny that the fees might be high for some docs, but there are some who wont take it if they can help a poor patient. As I said, there are many docs of either kind and you really cant pick in a medical college who might turn out to be what, although I have seen some typical cases of hardcore selfishness.Sadly, we aint allowed to judge and decide abt docs on the basis of empathy during admissions, and its a shame to see some bad apples spoil the image.

As for what Dinsan said, I agree that sometimes such untoward incidents may happen, but, where else does a student learn surgery?! Sadly enough, sometimes a human life might get risked, but most times, utmost care is taken and most surgeries are supervised by surgeons of even 30 yrs experience! ( in a med college scenario)… And as far as surgery is concerned, a surgeon needs a live body to help other patients, not to endanger them for the sake of learning. Sadly, though anatomy can be learnt on a cadaver, we cant learn surgery on the same. And yes, sometimes we commit mistkaes like other people..just that, our mistakes can ruin lives. But losing a patient isn’t a nice feeling at all.. You cant imagine how difficult it is, to keep looking after someone the whole night, doing all you can, only to see them expire away in the morning.. And yes, sadly, we aint gods!

  6. pnithya Says:

I know. Again I say, I do not blame every doctor. In fact I have met a very nice doctor. His name was Dr.Korian. His fee was rs 50 when I was a small kid. When I had to visit him once again after 12 years, I was surprised to know that he still got the same fee. He did his work like a service.
I can understand what you say and accept it too.
What I’m speaking about involves the bad doctors only.

  7. ~Joel.red~ Says:

Sad to hear about that pup. :-(
In this world where money has become a standard to rate human lives, we need to bear with things like this. If this is the case for humans, is there a need to talk about animals??? Hmmm, but at this moment what you could do is, follow your own principle “Most problems can be solved if can see from others point of view”. But whatever it may be it’s true that the Doctor profession is slowly losing it’s sacredness and not only doctor profession but also the teaching profession.
Hope you will soon find a service-minded veterinary doctor like Dr.korian.
Even in U.S.A. where the amount spent on pets is more than the budget of some Asian countries, people just chase away their pet dogs and cats when they grow old and were of use to their masters no more. And once they were chased away, they become stray animals and finally end up their lives under the wheels of some trucks in the streets. And this was well brought out in the movie “BABE”.
And the most heart-breaking fact is that the animals when chased away suffer like that suffer from depression, like human beings. But one good thing is that they don’t chase away their parents as Indians do.
I really Don’t know where is world is heading toward :-(

i appreciate your empathy towards nature…
keep this going and report every such incident you come across so that people will, at least, think a moment before they do such things…
let’s hope that gradually everyone will realize the need of being kind…

  9. Yuva Says:

may be not the answer you are looking but:

like another noble profession (teaching,..)– always we find good and bad personals. remember india is still cheapest medical decision and many are treated for free (or for almost nothing)… but some (poor or rich) man smokes/drinks and spoils his/her health and expect doc to save and for free…sorry to say they don’t deserve that attention. if we cannt be response to be healthy and take care our body then blaming doc wouldn’t help. and again docs profit margin (profit = income - expense) in still large % are reasonable.

its good to remember not all are fatal accidents, treated for cancer, aids,.. most health issues is due to our contribution. and docs are allowed to make money out of our stupidity.

  10. pnithya Says:

    @Joel
You are absolutely right. Doctor profession is no longer sacred. Babe portrayed life of animals beautifully.

Yuva, what you have typed here has no relevance to what I’ve written.

  11. pnithya Says:

Gireesh, I definitely will. I wrote this only because I really got infuriated when this doctor behaved like this.

  12. arvind Says:

what u said is cent percent correct . infact i feel the same way as you do..two weeks back i saw a video of a poor old lady who was injured and sick enough to be unable to stand at her feet..She was begging for treatment in front of a private nursing home…it was really a dreary video .. a worker had infact gone past her as if she wasn’t there/././she was lying there for 2 hours ..and the doctors tried to escape by saying that they dint had the facilities to cure her..
i had never thought that doctors who should cure people could behave savagely..

  13. Kavin Says:

hey… ofcourse I agree with you that some docs loot money… but there are also others who care for life more than money… am sorry about those poor pups… you just met the wrong doc…

  14. martianruler Says:

hey…its true that lots of doctors are dishonest hard hearted ppl…but then u hav lots and lots of doctors who are good too…u r slightly too harsh…the contribution of doctors to the human kind is incomparable! and those pups…very sry..but tel u wat?? u shud hav brought them to my dad ;-)

s Dr.Korian the one u r speaking of ,a cardiologist??…coz i heard frm my dad that the best cardiologist in the state or even country goes by that name…

  15. pnithya Says:

Arvind, Thats exactly what I’m trying to tell here. The Extent to which doctors have gone… in the evil money seeking route.

Kavin and ABC, I know there are good doctors. But You would definitely feel the same way as me when you can’t save a life and see someone dying in front of your eyes just because of bad doctors.
I’ve written this keeping in mine several other bad doctors too whom I was unfortunate enough to meet.
and Arun, Next time I shall ask you for help.

  16. beeping Says:

    Hello!
Forgive me, but do not know why everyone is so against the medical profession and the professionals these days.
While an MBA graduate earning a degree just within 3 years has every right, why not can a doctor go for a heavy fee, provided he is capable enough of? :O

In India, believe me, when it comes to expenditure on health, we DO MAKE every effort to keep the budget to the lowest ebb possible. Why?

It is then given the cover of “sanctity of doctors or the lack of it”. Tell me, the percentage of your family members and neighbours have their health insurance done? And whenever comes an opportunity to, how many of us do not want ourselves to get treated free?

Definitely, being poor does not mean there should not be an issue of availability and accessibility of resources of health care but why the so-called poor people want to go for private sector only? Why cannot they be treated at Public sector establishment.

I must say, this blog is highly biased and immature. No offense. But it compels me to think that the blogger is quiet inexperienced.

On the other hand, I fully agree that the quality and ethics in the health-care industry in India (read many a developing countries) is touching a nadir, but why to blame only one section of the population? :O

gypsygirl said things vary nicely but what to do when we have a deaf ear to things we have a presumption about!

Nobody asked you to visit that doctor. Every professional has his/her right to do things in the way s/he like to do.

Now on the matter of empathy. Would a bank empathy to a someone who has to marry his daughter but has no money and no property to have a loan against? Do hotels and restaurants show enough of empathy to people on the streets who sleep empty stomach?

    Give me a break.

Many around us go rampage on such a little issue that they miss the entire picture. And this is the pretty bad state of affairs in India.

Keeping a fee of INR 50 made you think that the doctor was great enough. Have you seen doctors who have been working without any fee.

Gal, open your eyes and look at the world.

    Regards,

  17. pnithya Says:

Alright! Listen up! For the umpteenth time, this post is only about BAD doctors and not the good ones! I know there are some rare doctors who treat patients without getting fee . There are government hospitals around, but do you know how far it is from our homes? Do you think , in an emergency anyone can travel all the way there just for treatment? That would be ridiculous , because one cannot travel by bus and hiring an auto would drain your entire wealth. Every professional has the right to do things their own way, only that I don’t agree with the things they do. What is the use of being a doctor if they cannot provide treatment when needed? Come on! Don’t tell me all the world’s population is poor and will try to get free treatment. These doctors will definitely be getting rich patients and all I ask for is some concern for the poor sector, where they can try to make themselves useful .
A MBA graduate has chosen his course to earn money. He does his work properly and earns it. A doctor chooses his course to TREAT PATIENTS. Unfortunately , some of them give preference to money rather than saving patients. I find that quite disgusting.
“Would a bank empathy to a someone who has to marry his daughter but has no money and no property to have a loan against? Do hotels and restaurants show enough of empathy to people on the streets who sleep empty stomach?”
Unfortunately you have not met a nicer crowd of humans who do help poor fathers get their daughters married and give a home for poverty stricken people! It is unfortunate that we humans can live happily in spite of seeing another dying. I would definitely try doing my bit of help in any of the above situations. Ah, please do take a break!!
If you had been in a situation where you had to let someone die in front of your eyes just because of some corrupt doctors, your speech would have been quite different ! But I doubt that because you seem to be quite ok with the fact that someone can die if they don’t have the money. I’m sure all of these doctors can survive by treating poor people freely and getting normal fees from the others. If you find this post biased, please, take a step to the door . I’m not that desperate for your opinions.
